At least 80% of people will experience low back pain at soome point in their lives. In fact Americans spend at least 50 billion dollars a year on low back pain. Fortunately, studies have shown that chiropractic care is more cost effective and safer than traditional medical remedies. It is the most common cause of job related disability and a leading contributor to missed work. Back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States. Only the headache is more common.
What Causes Low Back Pain?
There are a number of causes of low back pain. Fortunately, most low back pain is biomechanical in nature. This means that improper aligment and or function of the spinal column and supporting structures is the most common cause. Your doctor should be able to determine whether this is the cause of your particular pain, or if it is caused by something more serious such as infection, tumor, fracture, ect.. Sometimes low back pain occurs immediately following a traumatic event such as a fall or an auto accident. Other times a person may just wake up with back pain and not know what caused it. If the back is aligned and functioning properly, it can withstand tremendous forces, but when it's not, a simple act of leaning over to pick up a tissue from the floor can cause severe pain. Our chiropractors are trained to determine the cause of your back pain and to treat it appropriately or refer you to the appropriate health care provider.
Why Is It Important to Treat the Source of the Pain?
It was once thought that low back pain would heal on its own with rest. We know now that this is not true. Pain is not the problem...it is your body's way of telling you that there is a problem. Ignoring it does nothing to correct the problem. While pain killers can temporarily alleviate pain, they do nothing to correct the underlying problem. Recent studies have shown that even if the pain goes away on its own, it will most likely return. Leaving the underlying problem untreated can also lead to long term irreversible problems such as arthritis and spinal degeneration. Ask yourself...what would happen to my pain if I treated the source of the problem.
